Today we have some exciting news about the removal of open net salmon farms in the waters of British Columbia. Check out the Instagram post from Watershed Watch British Columbia below for more details!
Watershed Watch, BC:
[On June 22nd] the government took steps towards keeping its promise to remove open-net salmon farms from BC waters by 2025. The notice said they would not renew Discovery Island licenses and restrict all other licenses. salmon farms in two years, which signaled that net salmon cultivation in BC is coming to an end. However, this decision does little to protect wild salmon off the Discovery Islands over the next two years. Wild salmon streams remain at risk until the last salmon farm emerges from the ocean.
“Failure to renew fish farm licenses in the Discovery Islands is the only way to protect wild salmon from parasites and diseases,” says Stan Proboszcz, scientific adviser to the Watershed Watch Salmon Society. “The government must complete the work, across the province, in order to protect wild salmon.”
With salmon so close to the brink of collapse, we will continue to work to ensure that this transition happens smoothly and quickly.
