How To Tie: Twist Bugger Complex (tanned)

In this week’s “How to Tie” video feature, Cheech with Fly Fish Food ties a perfect streamer pattern for the fall season, the Complex Twist Bugger (Blacked-Out).

Learn about this fly:

Difficulty: Easy

Broadcast season is officially here! We can finally enjoy cool water temperatures and quality feeding fish once again. As those pre-spawn fish become more aggressive, they will show themselves and absorb the brookies that invade their space. This time of year consistently produces larger fish that boast stunning coloration. With the Complex Twist Bugger faded, you’ll be able to effectively target aggressive predatory fish this fall and potentially fool the fish of the season.

For a casting pattern, this fly is relatively simple and friendly to all skill levels. Some Woolly Bugger variations implement doubling loops, which normally make flies a bit more complicated and intimidating to tie. The darkened Twist Bugger complex does not use a doubling loop, but instead schlappen twisters and chenille flash, which is much harder to mess up. The combination of this body with the small dubbing head of the bruiser mixture allows for excellent movement and water propulsion with each reel.

Fishing this fly with a poly leader or sink tip will help land it in deep pools, but for shallow water a floating line is perfectly acceptable. The cone head will allow this fly to sink regardless of line, so it’s not a make or break. A 6 or 7 wt rod will give you the backbone to cast these larger casting patterns in any condition and are highly recommended. The Darkened Twist Bugger Complex is a streamer that should be fished with utmost confidence this fall season.
