See something, say something is always a good idea when you notice someone else looking a little off of fish in the water, especially when you see them carrying dozens of fish back to their car. That’s exactly what happened recently near Tippy Dam on the Manistee River in western Michigan, when an alert angler spotted something suspicious and called the Michigan DNR to take a look. When they arrived, they discovered that the overseas group had kept dozens of fish over their limit and were using illegal means and methods to catch them.
According to a Michigan DNR Facebook post, “Over 460 pounds of salmon were donated to a local community after a poaching tip near Tippy Dam. Thanks to a local fisherman, officers discovered that a group of out-of-state individuals had been fishing illegally and had used illegal methods to haul in over 50 fish.
Poached meat was donated by the DNR to Manistee County families, ensuring that the harvested fish did not go to waste.
