Oklahoma Bowhunter takes 204-inch whitetail deer

Each fall, we profile the giant deer tagged by hunters who knew their trophy well after collecting thousands of trail camera photos, getting the occasional (or frequent) sighting, and maybe racking up a year or two’s worth of antlers. Then a dramatic end to the saga. Oklahoma bowhunter Connor Webb had almost none of that when he killed a Sooner State monster this week. What he got instead was a very big and very pleasant surprise. “I first got this money on my camera just six days ago,” he told F&S. “I immediately went and set up a stand, quit my job and planned to work 8 hours a day to shoot it.”

The problem was, the wind shifted and Webb was unable to land in a stand overlooking a trail the buck used frequently. “So I picked a raised blind, in pretty much a scout. To my surprise, the dollar was in there with another 3 small dollars. I watched him for about an hour and he got 66 yards, but I didn’t feel comfortable making the shot.” The next evening, Webb wanted to hang a stand on the edge of the same field, but all the trees were either too big or too small, so I went back to the blind set up without much hope that he was that big.

“Well, the buck came out about an hour before dark with the same set of bucks from the night before,” Webb said. “He was taking pretty much the same route as the night before, so I didn’t think too much about making a shot. After watching him for 45 minutes, he started working closer, and finally he got to 44 yards, and I knew I could make that shot. I released my arrow and immediately saw the dollar drop. I panicked because I thought I was going to shoot him in the back; so, I shot another arrow.” When Webb got close to the money, he got a second surprise: “It turned out, the first shot was pretty perfect. It wasn’t until I got my hands on it that I realized how big it really was.” Webb scored the untypical big at 204⅜ inches B&C.
